The Disney+ streaming service is becoming the place where ideas for a sequel get a second chance. This week rumors are sweeping across Hollywood that a series based on the Lucasfilm movie “Willow” is being considered as a potential series for Disney+.

“Willow” was created by George Lucas and directed by Ron Howard. It starred Warwick Davis (Star Wars) in the title role, Val Kilmer as the warrior Madmartigan, and Joanne Whalley, Jean Marsh, and Billy Barty. The fantasy film featured many of the same themes as Star Wars with a battle between good and evil and the hero’s journey for it’s lead character.

We’ve been keeping track of the rumors, and strong desire to see a sequel among its stars and production team. According to this story in Deadline, Howard told MTV’s Happy Sad Confused podcast that Jon Kasdan, a Star Wars “Solo” writer/producer has been after him to reboot the movie for the Disney+ streaming service.

“I think it’d be a great way to go,” said Howard. “In fact, George always talked about the possibility of a Willow series, and it’d be great and more intimate, and built around that character and some of the others. And Jon Kasdan has, I think, an inspired take on it and it could be really, really cool.”

Deadline reports that sources at Disney confirm discussions are underway for a reboot.

If the project moved forward, Howard has said he’d be interested in where Willow is as a more mature wizard with more spells up his sleeve and more experience as well.
