Perhaps one of the most interesting stories recently was the idea of using Walt Disney World as a spot to help the NBA save their season. For more on the arguments outlined in favor of bringing the NBA to Walt Disney World, check out our post below.
According to USA Today, the NBA had a conference call with NBA owners on Friday that Disney Executive Chairman Bob Iger joined.
When the concept of a “bubble site” came up, NBA Commisioner Adam Silver said that “many [concepts] have been proposed to us and we only listened”. Silver went on to say that “we’re not seriously engaged yet in that type of environment”.
Of interest was the inclusion of Disney Executive Chairman Bob Iger on the call. Iger reportedly talked to league owners on how Disney has dealt with its theme parks, theaters, and ESPN since the COVID-19 outbreak. Various NBA owners asked Iger about a timeline to reopen, and Iger stressed that such a decision would be driven “by the data, and not a date”. It wasn’t immediately clear if the discussion of using Walt Disney World as a “bubble site” specifically was brought up in the meeting.
Disney and the NBA have a wonderful business relationship thanks to contracts with ABC and ESPN as well as the The NBA Experience at Disney Springs
